This is not a lesson in how something is made. It is why the technique came to exist, and why this person has kept at it. A premium experience for one group a day, in the workshop the artisan uses every day. Come and taste the traditional culture of Japan.
Okinawan indigo begins in a field. The cut leaves are sunk in water, fermented, then combined with lye to build a living vat. Very few artisans in the prefecture still handle this whole sequence. In this experience you put your own hands into that vat. Choose a scarf or a T-shirt to dye.

Visit the indigo fields growing in Okinawa's own climate, and learn about the plant, the history of Ryukyu indigo dyeing, and what the artisan has carried carefully through the years.
Choose the item you will make, then work out the pattern and the dyeing method in conversation with the artisan — preparing a one-of-a-kind piece that holds your own memory of the journey.
Learn the method directly from the artisan and dye your piece, watching the colour shift as it meets the air. What emerges belongs to Okinawa's tradition and its nature, and to no one else.
At the end of the experience, explore one-of-a-kind indigo-dyed pieces handcrafted by the artisan. Each piece has its own unique colors and patterns, created through traditional craftsmanship.
Bring a cotton shirt, a tote bag, a pair of jeans — anything you would like to carry Okinawa in. It is dyed alongside the piece included in your experience.
¥300 per 10g. A cotton shirt comes to roughly ¥6,000.
Cotton, linen and hemp take the dye well. Synthetic fabrics do not.

The sanshin is the instrument closest to daily life in Okinawa. At celebrations, or simply on an evening when the family gathers, it has always been there. In this experience you build one with your own hands — not an ornament, but a sanshin you can really play.

We explain how the session runs and what to watch out for. The artisan and guide introduce themselves and walk you through both the making and the playing. Anything unclear, please ask before we begin.
With the artisan's support you fit the fabric, sand the neck and apply the colour, building an original sanshin of your own. Holding the finished form in mind, you work through each stage carefully.
While the artisan completes the final assembly, the head of the sanshin school teaches you the basics — how to hold it, how to strike the strings. It is built for absolute beginners, and it puts you in touch with Okinawa's traditional music.
Your one-and-only sanshin is complete. Take a commemorative photograph with it to hold on to the day. The video filmed during the session is sent to you afterwards.

Not everyone can carry an instrument home in their luggage. So this is the other way in: you play instead of build. The head of a school with ninety-five years of history teaches you directly, on instruments most people never get to hold. What you take home is the music itself.

The workshop has been making and teaching sanshin for ninety-five years. You hear where the instrument comes from, and why it survived the years when almost nothing else did. Then you hold one.
How to sit, how to hold the neck, how to strike the strings. The head of the school teaches you directly. Complete beginners are the norm here, and the first note usually comes within minutes.
You start with a short piece, reading kunkunshī — Okinawa's own notation, unlike any Western score. Longer sessions take you further, into more demanding techniques and the traditional folk songs of Japan.
We record you playing and send you the edited video afterwards. The instrument may not fit in your suitcase, but the song you played and the memory of the day come home with you, as a film.

Yes. The day runs in English, and we interpret between you and the artisan, so ask anything you like. If you would prefer another language, tell us in advance — we handle it with translation tools alongside English.
Indigo dyeing suits children from around primary school age. Sanshin making involves blades and adhesives, so we suggest 13 and above. It depends on the child, though, so tell us their age and we'll advise. Accompanying without taking part is also fine.
Sanshin making is indoors and runs as planned. For indigo, the field walk may be shortened, but the dyeing itself is under cover and goes ahead. If a typhoon or anything affecting safety is forecast, we will contact you to cancel, and offer a new date or a full refund.

Indigo pieces go home with you the same day (we provide a bag if it is still damp). Sanshin can usually be handed over on the day, though depending on the finishing it may need to be shipped later. If shipping is required, postage is charged separately at actual cost, for both domestic and international destinations. If carrying an instrument home is the problem, the sanshin performance experience is the alternative — you learn to play rather than build, and what you take home is the music and a video of you playing it.
